Member insights from Matt Smith, Managing Director, Aspire 2Be
At Aspire 2Be, we work with organisations across Wales to help them embrace digital learning and upskilling. The message we hear time and again is clear: if Welsh businesses want to stay competitive and grow, digitalisation can no longer be optional.
The statistics underline the urgency. Nation Cymru reports that almost half of Welsh employers (47%) are still facing worrying skills shortages. Business News Wales highlights that 76% of leaders believe a lack of vital skills is holding back productivity, with digital skills identified as the most urgently needed (29%).
Why digital skills are essential
From cloud computing and data management to hybrid working tools and AI, digital capability underpins modern business. Without it, organisations risk losing ground to competitors, struggling to meet customer expectations, and missing opportunities for innovation.
We see daily how businesses that invest in digitalisation benefit from more efficient processes, better collaboration, and more empowered staff. These improvements directly support resilience and long-term growth.
Funded opportunities: breaking down barriers
Of course, we cannot ignore the pressure on business budgets. Training often feels like a luxury when resources are stretched. That’s why funded opportunities are so valuable.
Through Welsh Government initiatives and UK-wide funding, there is support available for both individuals and organisations to gain essential digital skills – often at little or no direct cost. These programmes can make a real difference, giving employers the tools to tackle skills shortages while allowing employees to build confidence and progress in their careers.
Too many businesses are either unaware of this support or underestimate its potential impact. If Wales is to build a digitally confident workforce, greater awareness and uptake of these funded opportunities is critical.
Closing the productivity gap
Skills shortages are not just a recruitment issue – they are directly linked to productivity. With three quarters of business leaders citing lack of skills as a barrier to output, the case for action is undeniable. Digital skills are no longer a “nice to have”; they are central to performance, compliance, and competitiveness.
By prioritising digital learning and making use of available funding, Welsh businesses can address their skills gaps, increase productivity, and build the adaptability needed for the future.
Digitalisation is no longer the preserve of the tech sector – it is vital for every industry. The businesses that act now to upskill their workforce will be the ones best placed to thrive. The future is digital. The question is: are we ready to embrace it?
