Partner Insight: Inspiring athletes and the next generation

The Chamber has welcomed a new affinity partner: Commonwealth Games Wales (Team Wales), the lead body for Commonwealth sport in Wales whose membership is made up of the governing bodies in Wales.

Meet Commonwealth Games Wales

The organisation is one of 74 Commonwealth Games Associations who are members of the Commonwealth Games Federation. It is one of only six countries to have competed in every single games since its launch in 1930.

Commonwealth Games Wales is responsible for selecting, preparing and leading Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games. This includes ensuring that the team for each games is as prepared as possible, while creating an inspiring environment for athletes and team members and providing strong leadership.

The body aims to raise awareness of the team, its activities and the Commonwealth by engaging with people in Wales and Welsh communities across the Commonwealth through its programmes in schools and business events.

Inspiring the next generation

Each year Commonwealth Games Wales’ youth engagement programme ‘Ysbrydoli Cymru’ or ‘Inspire Wales’ visits hundreds of schools across the country.

The programme aims to engage with young people and inspire the next generation through bespoke sessions, highlighting and developing key skills which can be applied within sport and in their everyday life.

The sessions range from school assemblies and class presentations to sports sessions and athlete Q&As and cover a variety of topics including equality, diversity and inclusion, nutrition, sustainability and financial resilience, as well as focused sessions on individual sports.

Connecting with businesses

Commonwealth Games Wales launched the Team Wales Business Club to highlight the depth and breadth of sporting talent in Wales to current stakeholders and future partners.

The Club is supported by its headline partner Cardiff Metropolitan University, a partner of Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid, and each event is themed around topics that are important to both business and elite sport. The Club has teamed up with Disability Sport Wales for its next event on 4 October which will feature athletes from this year’s Paralympic Games and cover topics including accessibility, intersectionality, neurodiversity and inclusive communication, leadership and workplaces.
