Partner Blog: USW named Cyber University of the Year for third year running

The University of South Wales has been named Cyber University of the Year for the third year running.

USW scooped the honour at the National Cyber Awards 2021 ceremony, held last night in London, which recognised those who are committed to cyber innovation, cyber crime reduction, and protecting citizens online.

USW won the award in both 2019 and 2020, and this year beat competition from CAPSLOCK Academy, Lancaster University, University College London, and the University of Wolverhampton.

Andy Bellamy, Course Leader for Computer Forensics, said: “We are extremely proud to have won this award for the third consecutive year, particularly against such strong contenders in our category.

“This past year has been very challenging for Higher Education, our students, and our staff. To have still been able to contribute to cyber education, outreach, and research in the UK, and to be recognised for all our hard work and dedication, is truly humbling.

“Our teams at Treforest, at the National Cyber Security Academy in Newport, and at the National Digital Exploitation Centre in Ebbw Vale, have all put together a really strong nomination showcasing some of their incredible achievements over the past year.

“We’ve recently been awarded the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) Gold standard as a recognised Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Education, and now have three NCSC-certified degree programmes running at Treforest.

“We are quickly shaping up to be one of the best places in the country to study cyber security.”

Other USW nominees in the awards were Beth Jenkins, who was shortlisted for the Cyber Student of the Year honour, and Senior Lecturer Gareth Davies, who was a finalist in the Cyber Citizen of the Year category.
