Exporting: the food and drink sector

This week the Welsh Government revealed that Welsh food and drink exports hit a record high. Exports reached £641m in 2021, an increase of £89m (16.1%) since 2020.

Exports to the EU were worth £465m in 2021, with eight of the top ten destinations for Welsh food and drink exports being within the EU. The Republic of Ireland is the highest value destination for exports while other top destinations include France, the Netherlands and Germany.

Outside of the EU, the USA and Saudi Arabia are the two non-European countries within the top ten destinations for food and drink exports.

A diverse product range is exported including meat, cereal, dairy and eggs, as well as beverages.

An industry insight

Among the businesses in the food and drink sector in Wales successfully exporting their goods is Penderyn Distillery.

The well-known company produces award-winning Welsh whiskies and spirits at its Brecon Beacons distillery. A second distillery opened in Llandudno opened in 2021 and a third one is planned to open in Swansea in late 2022.

Penderyn Distillery was recently crowned Wales Business of the Year at the Wales Business Awards 2022. Its record of trading internationally, especially exporting its products to sell in 48 countries across six continents, was recognised by the panel.

The judges of the Awards described Penderyn as a ‘home-grown success story, flying the flag for Welsh manufacturing, Welsh food and drink and promoting Wales.”
