Chamber Conversations begin with rugby legend

Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid held its first Chamber Conversations event on 15 February: a 6 Nations business networking lunch with All Blacks legend Justin Marshall.

New Chambers Wales member Clayton Hotel Cardiff demonstrated their hospitality expertise as the venue for the afternoon, putting on a delicious hot buffet lunch, providing discounts for members at the bar and curating spaces for members, partners and guests to network and connect.

Following introductions by the Chamber’s CEO Paul Butterworth, Events Manager Simon Clarke and event sponsor Ogi Pro, an enterprise member of the Chamber, businesses were able to glean valuable insights from rugby legend Justin Marshall’s many engaging stories throughout the afternoon.

A rugby fanatic growing up, Justin was just 22 when he made his All Blacks debut. As the second highest capped scrum half in his country’s history, he enjoyed a decade of success with his national team and demonstrated strong leadership as captain in 1997.

Following the end of his international career, he experienced playing in the northern hemisphere at teams including Leeds Tykes, Ospreys, Montpellier and Saracens before returning to New Zealand to focus on his new broadcasting career.

Justin spoke of his and his country’s love of rugby and the philosophy behind the All Blacks attitude to the game. He shared how respect for club and country is incredibly important; all players are custodians of the jersey and work towards a collective goal to leave the sport in a better place for future custodians.

He also discussed experiencing different team cultures during his playing career, taking on new challenges, adapting to change and individual and team approaches to performance.

An interactive Q&A session provided opportunities for members to gain further insight and ask Justin about the importance of building strong mindsets and how to transition from one career to another, as well as his opinions on the most skilled players in the game.

Simon Clarke, Events Manager at the Chamber, said:

“To have one of the greatest scrum halves in world rugby join us, members and their guests for the afternoon was an honour. Justin’s humour, humility and honesty kept us all entertained and enlightened. It felt a brilliant way to open up our Chamber Conversations series and we’re excited to bring in other industry experts to talk on relevant topics to our members.”

The Chamber Conversations series of events are just one of the many purposeful events that the Chamber runs that place members, partners and the wider business community in the right place at the right time to connect, network and thrive. Join the Chamber at future events.
