Chamber brings women together at Women’s Network launch

A week before International Women’s Day 2024, Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid launched the Chambers Women’s Network at Cardiff Business School.

Despite the rainy weather, Chamber members and women from businesses across south and mid Wales received a warm welcome from sponsors Acuity Law and Cardiff Business School (who are both partners of the Chamber) and Penny Lock, director of partnerships and business development at the Chamber.

The event provided an opportunity for women to come together and network, while also hearing from pioneering and inspirational women.

The Antarctic Fire Angels, Georgina Gilbert and Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe, gave a captivating talk on endurance and life as female firefighters, navigating a traditionally male-dominated environment.

The Antarctic Fire Angels are two firefighters who have served with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) and Mid & West Wales Fire Service (MAWWFS) respectively. The duo completed a South Pole expedition in January 2024, and now plan to expand the Fire Angel Foundation to offer female Fire Cadets and Girl Guides a three-month programme which concludes with a short expedition in Sweden.

They strive to lead by example and encourage women to practice positive self-esteem, confidence and to support each other during times of adversity. Their inspirational story captivated the audience and generated much conversation among Chamber members and other attendees during the interactive Q&A session.

Penny Lock, director of partnerships and business development at Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid, said:

“The Women’s Network launch was a huge success, and is an event we are extremely proud of especially leading up to International Women’s Day. The network is designed to be inclusive with a strong emphasis on social value. We are committed to making a difference to Wales and the women who live here, and this and many future events will create an insightful, impactful and fun place for women in Wales to come together and celebrate everything they do.

“We’d like to extend an additional thank you to our partners Acuity Law and Cardiff Business School for sponsoring this event and to the Antarctic Fire Angels for sharing their incredible journey. Their resilience, determination and achievements align with the values of our network and it was clear how strongly their story resonated with our audience.”
